Here are some reasons why you should golf during the off season.

Advantages:

  • Lower prices - many golf vacation packages and golf courses will offer lower prices for green fees during the off season, which can be a huge benefit. Hotels and golf resorts will also offer lower prices for the off season, but you will still probably pay more for weekend rates than you would for weekday rates, even though it is the off season.
  • Less people – Because not many people travel during the off season you won’t have large crowds of people during your golf vacation, which usually means shorter wait periods.
  • More choices – Due to the fact that less people are golfing during the off season your golf courses won’t be as crowded which means you can probably book tee times for the more popular courses. Also with less people playing you might be able to finish the course faster which leaves more time for the driving range or other activities.
  • Tee time – During the off season it is easier to reserve the most popular tee times because less people are trying to reserve a tee time. And you will also be able to get sent out on the course pretty close to your tee time because of the smaller amount of people.
  • Practice your game - By golfing during the off season you are able to keep in shape and improve your game for the coming season. Another way to help improve your game is to take some golf lessons at some golf schools or at a local golf resort.
  • Weather - The weather for golfing during the off season is both an advantage and a disadvantage. If you are going to places like Phoenix, Florida, or Vegas for your golf vacation going during the off season months can be beneficial because you won’t have to contend with the high temperatures. The off season months usually provide cooler temperatures which makes walking around the golf course much more pleasant.

Here are some reasons why you shouldn’t golf during the off season.

Disadvantages:

  • Weather - There is always a reason why there is an off season for any type of sport and one of the main factors is the weather. If you do decide to golf during the off season you should be prepared to make alternate plans just in case weather conditions prevent you from golfing.
  • Course closures – not all golf courses are open during the off season because they are doing needed maintenance or improving the golf course. The off season is perfect for these kinds of things because less people are traveling the courses so the golf course won’t be affected by the closure.

Whether or not you deicide to golf during the off season you need to keep in mind that you are going to have to be more flexible about making alternative plans. So if your favorite golf vacation destination has nothing to do besides golf you might want to rethink your vacation. Choose more popular destinations such as Vegas, Phoenix, San Diego or Florida. The weather in these areas is usually nice year round and the chances of snow are pretty rare. Where as other areas along the Eastern Coast have massive snow storms that could affect your entire vacation from flying to playing.
