Things to do while in Nassau, Bahamas

CYB0003Even in the days of pirates Nassau, Bahamas was known as a playground of activities!  So it makes sense that tourist today choose Nassau, Bahamas for the place to visit if you are looking for an active, fun-filled destination.  There have never been more options for things to do while on vacation in Nassau, Bahamas.  Visitors to Nassau, Bahamas can literally fill their hours from morning until evening with all sorts of things to do.  The options for things to do can seem overwhelmingly numerous when trying to narrow the choices of activities.  The savvy traveler would do well to research the options before leaving home and make the choices they want to try before reaching Nassau, Bahamas  Here are a few to consider-

  • By day-See the island by scooting around the island on a rented motor scooter, rental car or bicycle.  A note of caution though is being sure to drive on the left-hand side of the road, British style. Arrange to spend the day scuba diving or snorkeling the coral reefs.  Boats can be chartered for fishing.  Some of the most popular fish to go for are tuna and Wahoo.  Many resorts have tennis courts or can arrange time on championship golf courses.  Another option to consider is taking an island excursion tour.  Of course there is always the option to lay back and just relax in the sun!
  • By night-There are more options for nightlife in Nassau, Bahamas than there are hours in the day to experience them all.  There are several casinos on the island that offer all the gaming options.  Shows at various hotels and venues include cabaret, magic and acrobatic acts.  Not to be missed are the many moonlight dinner cruises or theater performances.
  • Anytime-Not to be missed is shopping for bargains along Bay Street, Nassau’s famous international shopping location. Liquor, perfume, jewelry and china are favorite items for duty-free shoppers, along with fine local and international crafts plus native goods, from handmade yards of batik to fine jewelry & Rolex watches. The best shopping bargains can be found among the straw craft items and souvenirs at the Straw Market. The stores on Bay Street are flanked by picturesque, pastel pink-colored Colonial-style Government buildings erected in the early 1800s by Loyalists.  These include the Houses of Parliament, the old Colonial Secretary’s Office and the Supreme Court all surrounding a marble statue of Queen Victoria.  Many experienced tourists recommend visiting Parliament Square in downtown Nassau Bahamas which is the traditional center of Bahamian government. Each season, the Opening Ceremonies of the Supreme Court fill the square with pomp and pageantry. In addition visitors shouldn’t miss visiting the many historic forts that dot the landscape of Nassau.  By traveling further downtown visitors can see the historic and majestic Fort Charlotte. Built in 1788, it is complete with moat, open battlements, even dungeons.  While many visitors only recognize Nassau for its prized beaches there is a great detail of architecture that shouldn’t be missed.   Prized for its safe harbor, Nassau Bahamas made history which has been preserved nicely in the Victorian mansions displaying elegant noble architecture, cathedrals, weather-beaten 18th-century forts and a hand-carved Queen’s Staircase, whose 66 steps lead to a view of the island that is not to be missed.

Between the beaches, water sports and land activities visitors to the beautiful island paradise of Nassau, Bahamas can expect to fill both their days and their nights.  Rent a scooter, see the sights and do some shopping and then while you bask in the golden sunlight you can make a list of what to see on your next trip to Nassau, Bahamas!
