og_049-big__credit_oregon_surf_dot_comIf you are a surfer, a vacation would not be a vacation without a beach and some big waves. So, the following are some vacation ideas for surfers:

  1. Australia: there are tons of places in Australia to surf. Pick a beach and go. Australia is the home of many of the largest surf competitions in the world. So, it is obviously a great place to surf. However, one caution is that you want to pick surf that fits your skill level. While surfing is a lot of fun, you do not want to fly back from Australia in a casket. If you would like to learn to surf, Australia also boasts tons of great surf schools, world famous teachers, etc. In fact, there are schools designed specifically to take you from a beginner to a competitor in competitions. So, when you hit Australian shores, whether it is in Queensland or the Western Coast, you are going to have so much fun! Just don’t forget to pack your sunscreen.
  2. Mexico: The beaches of Mexico boast great waves, and a fun time. You can find a condo right on the beach to rent, or you can stay in a resort.  Mexico is a great place to take a surf vacation because unlike many other surf destinations, the beaches of Mexico are not crowded. Mexico has over 6000 miles of coastline, over 1500 miles on the mainland Pacific.  There are sections of the coast that are covered with beaches, points, reefs and rivermouths. Waves vary from slow rollers to crashing tubes.  It seems that every few miles of waterfront offers a new surf spot, most of which are empty. Mexico is the perfect vacation idea for surfers as it offers all kinds of surf, from a gnarly, hollow, tubing beach break like Puerto Escondido (Oaxaca) or Pascuales (Colima) to a mellow longboard heaven like Sayulita (Nayarit) or La Saladita (Guerrero).  Some of the well known spots can be crowded but there are many other breaks where you can surf all alone. However, it is always safer to hit the beach in pairs.
  3. Canary Islands: the Canary Islands, off the coast of Spain are a surfers paradise. With beautiful beaches, great waves, and enough surf spots so satisfy even the most avid of surfers. The Canary Islands sometimes have small waves, so if you want to hit the bigger waves, check the surf forecast and go during the right time of year.
  4. Hawaii: The shores of the various islands of Hawaii have provided surfer with great waves for years. There are certain months that the surf is better than others, for example, if you go in November, you have to hit the right beaches, and you should be prepared for some big swells. The summer months are the best time of year for the average surfer, though you can find great surf in various spots along the coastlines all year round. And, because everywhere you go there is a beach, even though there are a lot of people, it is not too crowded.
  5. California: Southern California boasts some pretty major beach options for surfing. From Carlsbad, Torrey Pines, Oceanside, La Jolla, etc. surfers can find the right swell, and right atmosphere for their surfing fun. So, whether you surf short board or long, you will be able to find the right beach for your surfing needs, plus you get great weather, and other local attractions.
