Getting through the airport quickly

The following are some tips for getting through the airport quickly. There are times when lines are astronomical, and the time to get through security is crazy. The following tips will help speed up the process so that you do not spend more time of your travel in airport lines than you have to.

Know the airport. Some airports are known for high traffic, long lines, and slow security check points. You should familiarize yourself with the airport, and even the terminal you will be using. Take a few minutes online to see what others have to say about the airport you are flying out of or in to. For example, the San Diego airport is typically fairly efficient, without too long of lines, etc. it takes about 15-20 minutes to get through security and to your gate.  The LAX airport, on the other hand is always very crowded, and you usually wait 45 minutes to an hour to get through security. This means you need to get to the airport early to make sure you do not miss your flight.

Check in online. Most airlines allow you to check in online, and print your ticket, boarding pass, etc. at home. This is going to save you time because it is one less line you have to get in, one less time you have to pull your identification out to show someone, and one less thing to worry about once you get there. In addition, if you are checking luggage, checking in online can actually save you some money, as most airlines give you a discount if you do that online rather than at the airport.

Make it easy on yourself to get through security.
Security checkpoints are going to be the same everywhere, in that you can’t have more than a few ounces of liquid, you have to empty your pockets of phones, cameras, keys, anything metal. You have to take your shoes off. You have to take your belt off. You have to take your laptop out of the case, etc. So, save time and make it easy to get through by wearing easy on and off shoes, and by keeping your pockets clear of items, etc. Put them in a bag, backpack, etc. Also, plan ahead, while you wait in line, start to remove belts, laptops, etc. so that you are not holding up the line doing it at the x-ray.

Get rolling luggage. Carrying a duffle bag can get heavy an slow you down, so get through the airport more quickly by investing in some good luggage that is easy to roll, carry, and store in an overhead bin.

Choose flights, etc. that are not busy. If you get to the airport for a flight that is full, the lines will be longer everywhere, even the bathrooms, so choose times of day, and flights that are not as full, and you will have fewer people to contend with at the airport.

If you do these four things, you will still have to wait in some lines, because that is just how it goes, but you will get through more quickly and efficiently.
